Hindigram
A site in Devanagari, for an organisation that runs on volunteers
Overview
What this is
The website of Matribhasha Unnayana Sansthaan, a Hindi language organisation in Indore. Programme pages, volunteer recruitment, a publishing division and village-level committees, written and read almost entirely in Devanagari.
Approach
How we thought about it
Two things made this different from the commercial work beside it. The first is the script. A site that is almost entirely Devanagari is not an English site with the words swapped: the type has to be set for it, the line height has to carry the matras without collisions, and the font has to arrive quickly on a slow connection or the page renders in whatever the device happens to have. The second is who the site is for. Most visitors are not buying anything — they are deciding whether to volunteer, or working out what a programme expects of them. So the pages are organised around the questions a prospective volunteer asks, with the eligibility and the commitment stated plainly rather than buried under the mission.
Not every project is commercial, and we would rather show one that is not than pretend the portfolio is uniform.
Scope
What we built
- Programme pages for the organisation's separate initiatives
- Volunteer information with eligibility and expectations stated up front
- Publishing division pages for its Hindi literature imprint
- Campaign and committee structure laid out so a local group can find its own place in it
- Typography set for Devanagari rather than inherited from a Latin theme
