A Hindi news portal, built to publish all day
Overview
What this is
An independent Hindi digital news platform covering politics, national and international affairs, Madhya Pradesh, sport, business, education, health, technology and lifestyle. Built on WordPress so the newsroom publishes without going through a developer.
Approach
How we thought about it
A news site is not a brochure with more pages. It is a tool somebody uses twenty times a day under time pressure, and almost everything about the build follows from that. Publishing has to take seconds, not minutes, which is why this is WordPress and not a custom CMS — a bespoke editor would have been better software and worse for the people typing into it at eleven at night. The category structure is the real architecture: with this many sections, where a story is filed decides whether anyone finds it, both on the site and in search. And the whole thing is read on a phone, on mobile data, by someone who will leave if the headline is not on screen quickly.
WordPress was the right answer here for the same reason it was wrong for some of the other projects on this page: the thing that changes constantly is the content, not the system. A newsroom needs to publish, correct and re-file a story without raising a ticket.
Scope
What we built
- Category structure across the publication's sections, from national and state news through to sport, business and lifestyle
- Article pages laid out for reading on a phone, with the headline and the first paragraph reachable without scrolling
- Typography set for Devanagari rather than inherited from a Latin theme — matras need the line height, and the font has to arrive fast on mobile data
- Home and section pages that put the newest story first without an editor having to arrange them
- Editorial workflow kept short, because a publishing step nobody can remember is a publishing step that gets skipped
- Search and archive, so older coverage stays reachable instead of falling off the end of a feed
